Deacon George Croom Jr. Obituary

Deacon George Croom Jr., went home to glory on Sunday, March 23rd.  He was born December 6,1938 in Greensboro, Alabama to George Croom Sr. and Annie Lee Croom (Diggins).  He was the oldest of nine children. 

The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1955 where George attended East Tech High School.  In 1957, he met his future wife, Essie Beatrice Coleman.  They married on June 14, 1958 and had four children:  Jacqueline Evon, Gwendolyn, George Edward and Brendalyn.  They were married for 66 years.

George worked at various jobs, sometime more than one job at a time, to support his family.  At Eagle Laundry he was foreman.  He drove an over the road truck for Tavens Transportation and then as an independent contractor for Central Transport.  He worked as a mechanic at the Metal Improvement Company for more than 10 years.

George accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age in Greensboro, Alabama.  In Cleveland, he was ordained as a deacon and love to sing to the Lord in various male choirs.    He joined New Home Missionary Baptist Church on February 23rd, 2014 under the leadership of Dr D. Anthony Bohles.

George became ill in 2020 and spend his remaining years at Jennings Assisted Living Facility in Garfield Heights.

George was a loving, gentle and kind person who loved spending time with his family, watching baseball, basketball and Westerns. 

George was preceded in death by his parents, George Croom Sr and Annie Lee Croom, his brother, Robert and his sister, Judie.

He leaves behind his wife:  Essie B. Croom (Coleman); four children:  Jacqueline Evon Croom, Gwendolyn Croom , George Edward Croom and Brendalyn Croom; five sisters: Lucinda Croom, Bettie Croom, Catherine Croom, Joyce Wood (Anthony), Patricia Keith (John); brother: Harrison Croom (Wanda); four grandchildren:  Anthony Sr (Kia) Croom, Christina Croom, Jeremy Croom and Ashley Tucker; six great-grandchildren:  Josephine Croom, Anthony Jr Croom, Chelsea Croom, Messiah Beasley, Ashton, Legend Croom;  two great great-grandchildren:  Jeremiah Croom, Ryleigh Miller and a host of nieces and nephews.  

He was loved by 4 generations of family members, passed away on March 23, 2025.   Funeral services will be Saturday April 5th at New Home Missionary Baptist Church 15225 Sunview Avenue.  The wake begins at 10:00am.  The service will begin at 10:30am.   Interment will be at Cleveland Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be Friday from 5:00-7:00pm at Lucas Memorial Chapel 9010 Garfield Blvd. in Garfield Heights.
