Clyde Hudson was born, the 6th of 8 children, in Brierfield,
Alabama to the late Clyde Cleveland and Willie A. ( Jackson) Hudson
on April 30, 1942. Clyde and Willie moved their family to Wheeling,
West Virginia when Clyde was at a young age. There, Clyde attended
Triadelphia Junior High where he played baseball, which was his
favorite sport but he also loved to play basketball most. Clyde would say
he was a great basketball player but was always underestimated because
of his height. From there, he attended Wheeling High School. Clyde
decided to leave West Virginia at the age of 16 to move to Florida.
While in Florida, Clyde lived an interesting life; fishing in
the Indian River, working with horses, and hanging out in juke joints
in the Everglades during the 1950’s. Upon leaving Florida, Clyde
followed his heart and moved to New York. There, he worked on a
race track grooming horses at Belmont Park in Elmont. Clyde took
great care of the horses and they were his pride and joy. He understood
their temperament, how to treat them, and what made a horse tick.
On September 9, 1967 his horse “Cleareye” won first place and on
September 20, 1967, another one of his horses “Flit-to” won 1st place
in the United Nations Handicap Race in Atlantic City over the favorite
Assagai “...by a nose”.
When living in Elmont, New York, Clyde met Nellie Gray
Braswell in 1965. During their time together, Clyde Anthony and Helen
“Tina” Braswell were born. Clyde and Nellie remained friends until her
passing in 2008. After living in New York for a few years, Clyde moved
to Cleveland, Ohio. Here, he met Brenda L.Young in 1976. After dating
for a few years, they were married on August 10, 1979. From their union,
Nakia was adopted and James Steven and Michael Ryan were born.
Clyde started working for the North Coast Baking Company
(Kroger) on November 25, 1969, and was a member of the Local 19
Union. While working for Kroger, he was in their bowling league where
he showcased his talents on a weekly basis at Hilltop Lanes. He won
many trophies being a part of the bowling league. During off season,
Clyde would take his children to the lanes to teach them how to bowl.
After many years of service, Clyde retired from Kroger, which eventually
became Schwebel’s in 1999, on May 1, 1999.
Clyde spent his downtime, of his younger years, at Thistledown
Race Track where he met up with family and friends to have a good time.
When he was not there, he spent time at home, which was the hangout,
where family and friends were always welcomed and guaranteed to have
a good time.
Clyde appreciated good music. He collected vinyl albums and
records, which among them were Jerry Butler, James Brown, Tina
Turner, and Sam Cooke. Clyde loved watching the Cleveland Indians
(Guardians), his favorite team to watch. And on quiet Saturdays, Clyde
was satisfied with his Saturday staple, which was blackeyed peas and
cornbread.
Clyde accepted Jesus Christ in his later years He began to
attend church with his family when his health allowed. Clyde held
dear the phone calls and visits from his sister, nieces and nephews, in
person and virtually, and being able to spend time with his children
and grandchildren during holidays and birthdays, as well as talking and
laughing with his daily caregivers. His life was a well lived one.
On December 10, 2025, Clyde departed this life. He was preceded
in death by his parents, Clyde and Willie A. Hudson, siblings, Leronia
Davis, Lavern Hudson, Evelyn Cook, Mary Lou Hudson, Willie Mae
Cassidy, and James Hudson, and his loving wife of 46 years, Brenda
